A 4/12 pitch multiplies your flat footprint area by 1.054 — a 1,200 sq ft footprint becomes 1,265 sq ft of actual roof surface. A 12/12 pitch multiplies by 1.414, turning that same footprint into 1,697 sq ft. This matters because shingle bundles are counted by actual surface, not footprint.
Worked example: A 1,500 sq ft house (40 by 37.5 ft footprint) with a 6/12 pitch. Adjusted area: 1,500 x 1.118 = 1,677 sq ft. Add 10% waste: 1,845 sq ft. Divide by 100 = 18.5 squares. For 3-tab shingles (3 bundles per square): 56 bundles. For architectural (4 bundles per square): 74 bundles.
Bundle math: each bundle of 3-tab shingles covers about 33 sq ft. Architectural bundles cover about 25 sq ft. Both need 3 or 4 bundles to make one square (100 sq ft).
Pitch multipliers: 4/12 = 1.054, 5/12 = 1.083, 6/12 = 1.118, 7/12 = 1.158, 8/12 = 1.202, 10/12 = 1.302, 12/12 = 1.414.
Contractor note: always include 10% waste for simple gable roofs and 15% for complex hip or cut-up roofs with valleys. Waste runs higher on cut-up roofs because every valley and hip requires trimming each shingle course.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure roof pitch without going on the roof?
Use a level and a tape measure at the eave. Hold a 2-foot level horizontally against the rafter tail or rake board. At the 12-inch mark, measure straight up to the underside of the rafter. That vertical measurement is your rise — a 6-inch rise means a 6/12 pitch.
What is the minimum pitch for asphalt shingles?
Most shingle manufacturers specify a minimum 2/12 pitch (about 9.5 degrees). Below 2/12, you need a low-slope membrane system. At 2/12 to 4/12, follow the double-underlayment requirement in your shingle installation instructions.
How many bundles of shingles per roofing square?
Three-tab shingles: 3 bundles per square (each bundle covers 33 sq ft). Architectural (dimensional) shingles: 4 bundles per square (each bundle covers 25 sq ft). Always buy an extra bundle for waste and ridge cap.
How many roofing squares for a 1,500 sq ft house?
Depends on pitch. At a 6/12 pitch, the actual roof area is 1,500 x 1.118 = 1,677 sq ft = 16.8 squares before waste. Add 10% for a simple gable = 18.5 squares. At 8/12 pitch, that becomes 1,500 x 1.202 = 1,803 sq ft = 19.8 squares.
What is the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?
Three-tab shingles are flat, uniform, and weigh about 200 lbs per square. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are laminated for texture, weigh 250 to 400 lbs per square, and typically have a 30- to 50-year warranty vs 20 to 25 years for 3-tab. Architectural shingles cost 20 to 40 percent more per square.
